 FAQs about Ballet Competitions

  • Ballet competitions will all tell you the same thing, it isn’t about winning, but about the opportunities presented at each competition. Ballet competitions will teach a kid to work on variations consistently and teach them humility, tenacity, and respect for the art.

  • This is going to vary on your coach, but most people will recommend 1/2 per variation/solo a week. So if you are going to compete 2 classical variations and 1 contemporary variations, your total would be 1.5 hours a week.

  • You will be expected to present a clean and turnout variation, with a level of artistry that is age appropriate.

  • Potential is a big thing in ballet, because as dance educators, we have to predict what will happen to the body during puberty, what will happen within years of training, and how much of an artist a child will develop into.
